More about studying in Winchester »
Winchester is the county town of Hampshire, located in South East England. It sits at the western end of South Downs, along the river Itchen. It is thought that the area was originally settled in pre-Roman times. It is home to Winchester Cathedral, the longest cathedral in Europe, originally built in 1079. Visitors can view the famous Winchester Bible, medieval carvings, and 12th century wall paintings. The cathedral plays host to a number of events throughout the year, so students enrolled in English school in Winchester should be sure to check the schedule often. Along with the cathedral, in the city centre, be sure to check out The Great Hall and King Arthur’s Round Table. The Great Hall is the only remaining part of Winchester Castle. A stop at the Winchester City Museum helps visitors get a good understanding of the story of Winchester. The town of Winchester plays host to a number of festivals throughout the year, including the Winchester Film Festival, Winchester Hat Fair and the Winchester Chamber Music Festival. Students taking English courses in Winchester should definitely explore the area via bicycle or on foot. There are cycling trails that range from flat and simple, to the more challenging trails like some of those found at South Downs Way. Students hoping to spend some time shopping will not be disappointed. Winchester is known for its independent shops, boutiques and art galleries. Also check out the city markets on Middle Brook Street, with local foods on Wednesdays and general street markets on Thursdays through Saturdays.
