Lisbon is the capital of Portugal. It is also its largest city, and one of the most visited cities in southern Europe. Some archeological discoveries suggest that the Phoenicians may have inhabited this area from 1200 BC. From that time, through a history marked with fires, famine, plagues, wars, and earthquakes, Lisbon has survived to become the popular destination that it is today. Students attending Portuguese school in Lisbon will enjoy Lisbon’s friendly people and relaxed pace of life. To learn more about this beautiful city there are many attractions throughout the town that offer glimpses into the historic riches of Lisbon. Consider a visit to the Lisbon Cathedral, a glorious 12th century medieval structure, much resembling a fortress. Take time to visit the Alfama neighborhood, basically a village within the larger city of Lisbon that still maintains its old look and feel. It has narrow streets, and whitewashed houses with wrought iron balcony rails. These lovely back streets are like taking a step back in time. Students taking Portuguese courses in Lisbon will notice the Castle of St. George, which is visible throughout the city. Take time to visit the castle. The views from the towers are amazing and within the castle there is a museum, a café and a souvenir shop to peruse. While in Lisbon, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to sample their local cuisine, in which fish plays a major role. You’ll also notice that the Portuguese have a sweet tooth and are known for leite-crème, a delicious egg custard dish. Visitors will enjoy the climate in Lisbon, with mild winters and warm to hot summers. Students will enjoy all that Lisbon has to offer, from the castles to the open air markets to the people.
