The city of Syracuse was founded in approximately 734 BC by Greek settlers, and was one of ancient Greece’s most important cities. Located on Sicily’s southeast coast, Syracuse is filled with important historical artifacts from its lengthy past. Students attending Italian school in Syracuse should be sure to take time to visit many historic sites. The Teatro Greco (Greek Theatre) was built in approximately 500 BC and was designed to hold thousands of spectators. Visitors can not only visit this amazing piece of history, but can still catch live performances during certain times of the year. Students will find much to do and see on Ortygia Island, also known as Old City or Citta Vecchia. Ortygia lies within Syracuse’s harbor. Students taking Italian courses in Syracuse cannot help but be fascinated by the many historical buildings and churches found within the city. While in Syracuse, be sure to sample the local cuisine which includes many dishes made with fresh seafood. Honey and almonds are used extensively in local desserts. Be sure to try the giuggiulena, a delicious nougat flavored with sesame seeds. There are many outdoor activities to do in Syracuse as well. Some visitors enjoy taking a guided boat tour. Some tours offer great views of the city, others are focused on an activity like snorkeling. The climate in Syracuse is fairly mild with somewhat wet winters and hot, dry summers. Students will find that Syracuse is a fascinating city with beautiful views, an interesting history, and welcoming people.
