The Tuscan city of Arezzo is located in central Italy. Possibly most recognizable as much of the setting for Roberto Benigni’s Oscar winning film ‘Life is Beautiful’, Arezzo rests in the middle of four valleys. Considered by some to be the agricultural center of trade in Italy, Arezzo is also the home to some very interesting medieval structures. Its Gothic cathedral dates back to 1286 and is well known for its beautiful stained glass windows. The Basilica of San Francisco is an example of the Tuscan-Gothic style of architecture. It houses an important fresco by Piero della Francesca. The Bruni Palace is another interesting landmark. It dates back to the 15th century and houses a museum and gallery. The Roman Amphitheatre and museum is yet another fascinating stop for those visiting Arezzo. Students enrolled in Italian school in Arezzo can explore many of the historic sites. The historic old town is easily explored on foot, but be sure to wear comfortable shoes. Students taking Italian courses in Arezzo should be sure to sample some of the local cuisine. Acquacotta a bread soup made with porcini mushrooms, and Chianina Steak are two popular choices. Students lucky enough to be visiting Arezzo during the medieval festival Saracen Joust involves a good portion of the town’s population dressing up in medieval costumes, cheering on the knights on horseback in this annual event. Whether sampling the local cuisine or strolling through the historic town center, students will find themselves immersed in this quaint Tuscan town, able to experience Italy and all its charm.
