Faro is the capital of the Algarve region of Portugal. Long considered a great destination for holiday travelers, students taking Portuguese courses in Faro will enjoy the attractive marina, the beautiful parks and more. While in Faro, be sure to visit the Algarve Regional Museum to learn about the city’s customs, people, and way of life. The Ramalho Ortigao Museum Maritime is a great place to learn about Faro’s maritime history, and the Faro Archeological Museum has a great display of ancient artifacts, as well as 17th century paintings. Another interesting and extremely unique attraction is found behind the Igreja do Carmo church. The Capela dos Ossos is a chapel constructed of the skulls and bones of monks. Not for the faint of heart, this spectacle was built to remind visitors of their mortality. On a much brighter note, students enrolled in Portuguese school in Faro will love the laid back atmosphere in Faro. With plenty of outdoor cafes and pedestrian lanes, a walking tour of Faro is a pleasant excursion for any visitor. Be sure to check out the shopping in the heart of town. With a wide variety of foods and restaurants, try the catch of the day, or some of the local cakes and desserts. With the university in town, Faro has a vibrant student population, lending to the active nightlife. Visitors can enjoy all this traditional Portuguese village has to offer, and also spend some relaxing time on the nearby beaches. The climate is Mediterranean sub-tropical, meaning that Faro is a great destination year round.
