Rouen located in northern France on the river Seine. This historic city is the capital of Normandy and it has seen its share of troubles over the course of its life. It was destroyed by fire and plague on multiple occasions during the Middle Ages. It was occupied by the English during the Hundred Years’ War and it is also the spot where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in 1431. During World War II approximately 45% of the city was destroyed. Yet despite all of this, the city has been meticulously restored to its former glory and is truly an amazing place to visit. Students enrolled in French school in Rouen should be sure to visit Rouen’s Notre Dame Cathedral. This Gothic cathedral is considered one of the most beautiful in northern France. Its lacey stonework is distinctive, and its towers and spires are particularly elegant. Students looking for some downtime from their French courses in Rouen might enjoy perusing the antique shops in old town, or catching a concert or play. The medieval quarter is particularly well restored and is noted for its charming half-timbered houses. Rouen also has a variety of interesting museums with art and historical artifacts from the region. The Musee des Beaux-Arts de Rouen contains paintings by well known artists like Claude Monet. The Museum of Fine Arts and Ceramics holds a beautiful collection of porcelain which was the forte of Rouen artists between the 16th and 18th centuries. Although there is much to see and do within Rouen, it is also located in the perfect spot to allow visitors to explore other beautiful areas in Normandy.
