More about studying in Cannes »
Cannes is one of the best known resorts on the French Riveria. It is the host of the annual Cannes Film Festival and a popular tourist destination. Not surprisingly, it is also known for its luxury shops, restaurants and hotels. Previously a small fishing village, the area that is now Cannes seems to have been settled since the 2nd century BC. While it might seem that everything in Cannes has to do with its film festival, this is not the case. Students enrolled in French school in Cannes will find that there are a number of attractions for visitors to explore. Cannes is home to several museums including the Maritime museum where guests must arrive via boat. This museum is open year round and has several exhibits including antique Roman and Arabian ceramics. It is located in the Sainte Marguerite Island fortress which was once a well known prison. The Castre Museum is another fascinating excursion. It is located in the Castre Tower which was built in the 11th century. It houses archeological items from around the world but predominantly from the Mediterranean area. It also has artwork from the 18th and 19th century on display. Visitors get an excellent view of the Cannes bay from the top of the tower. Students taking French courses in Cannes will quickly see that there is more to Cannes than the glitz and glamour of the film festival. Time spent learning the language, walking the beaches, exploring the museums and sampling the local cuisine is all time spent learning about this interesting resort town.
