Course description

The UPC (University Preparation Courses) program is designed for International students who have already attained their high school diploma either in Canada or in their home country. The UPC program prepares international students to meet the English level requirements necessary to enter Canadian universities. Students in this program will also take six pre-university courses that are necessary for entrance into the student’s particular program of interest at the university. TAIE offers a number of courses that can accommodate the students’ needs and interests with regard to their program of choice.

Some key features of the program include:

o Flexible schedule with six start dates in a year
o Students can finish six pre-university courses in 4 to 6 months
o Students can apply for conditional Letter of Acceptance or Letter of Intent from TAIE’s partner universities
o An opportunity to upgrade marks in preparation for university application
o An opportunity to fulfill missing admissions requirements
o Preparation of students specifically for university in Canada
o A supportive environment with friendly and knowledgeable guidance counselors assisting students for university and college application
o An opportunity to waive TOEFL/IELTS by taking ENG4U or EAP courses*

When entering the UPC program, all students are given an English placement test to determine their level of English. To be successful in the UPC program, students usually need to improve their English language skills. An ESL program is in place to ensure students will have the necessary language base to succeed once they start the university preparation courses.

Each 110-hour university preparation course is offered over a period of approximately two months. Courses are scheduled in the morning, afternoon or evening. Upon successful completion of each course, the student receives one credit from the Ministry of Education of Ontario. This credit is reported on the student’s Transcript and is recognized by the admissions offices of Canadian universities.

UPC students have a chance to upgrade their marks and their average before applying to university, and in the process, improve their English language skills. They also become comfortable in a new cultural environment. UPC students work closely with the TAIE guidance counsellor to ensure entrance requirements are being fulfilled for the university of their choice. Some of our former students in this program have attended the University of Toronto, University of Alberta, University of Waterloo, University of Western Ontario, York University and McMaster University.
