Standard Portuguese is for students who want to maximize their language learning practice during their stay. It covers 20 hours per week and outdoor lessons planned and held by our teachers (2 afternoons/ week). Standard focuses heavily on speaking and communication skills: the morning consists of 4 lessons that cover all language skills. These lessons provide the opportunity to learn the local culture and customs.
The classes stress the use of language in everyday situations. In 4 lessons each day, students will work on grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary which are always approached in relevant communication contexts. Our lessons also focus on reading, writing, speaking and listening in a balanced and carefully planned programme that is tailored to each group's needs and characteristics. Textbooks and a variety of other materials are used in instruction, including audio material, youtube short videos, TV news and newspapers, magazines and other authentic materials.

Oficina de Português opened in 2009 right in the city center and has devoted to teaching Portuguese as a second language ever since. Our programmes focus on all language skills necessary to communicate in Portuguese in the shortest time possible. Our approach to teaching is eclectic and this shows in our lessons as we give our students the confidence and the skills to effectively communicate and understand language in context. Students should expect lessons held in a friendly atmosphere with highly skilled teachers.
Students can choose from a variety of general language programmes that range from extensive to intensive courses. Oficina de Português also offers a weekly calendar of social activities that are intended to work as outdoor lessons. These enable our students to the city and at the same time to put Portuguese to practice while still counting on one of our teachers for support.
Our facilities include a student/ teacher lounge with coffee and water. We also offer study materials that students may borrow.
The nationality and age mix at Oficina de Português Porto varies over different time periods, courses and levels. Throughout the year, the average age is 32. In the summer, the average age is 28.
Oficina de Português is located right in the city centre next to Bolhão Market and Bolhão metro station. All main attractions are at a walking distance from school.
I loved the size of the school with small classrooms and few students. A very welcoming place where I felt very comfortable to learn Portuguese in the best conditions. I chose the 20-hour-per-week intensive course and the truth is that the teacher Rita is so dynamic, friendly and very professional that she passionately and pleasantly conveyed her language, her culture...her advice for discovering her country. In two weeks, I learned a lot. I 100% recommend this school located very close to the metro and the famous Bolhão market. Many thanks to the entire team at the Oficina del Português in Porto.

The school is well located in the oldest part of the city, well connected to public transportation servcies.

Raquel did a great job of catering to the different skill levels of the group of students in the class. She was good at addressing questions and topics that people raised, while still ensuring that we stayed on track with the curriculum. I was not involved in housing or social activities for the school, so cannot rate those.

My teachers were excellent very personalised classes

Vanessa began and ended classes with reviews of what I had learned, added cultural insight into the words and phrases introduced in the lessons, as well as providing each student with time to digest newly acquired information and to practice in class and at home through well-crafted lessons. For example: While learning the word used in Portuguese for office (ecritorio), I was able to equate the learned information with your company's name "Oficina de Português Porto," I learned that though it should read "Ecritorio de Português Porto, "the use of "oficina" allows for a whimsical and thoughtful play on the linguistic homonym. I liked the following: books, the use of class time, and the relaxed professional atmosphere of the office, as well as the break. What I did not like: the flight of stairs, and sometimes hit and miss of the entry chimes.

You practice Portuguese in little groups and with teachers who love to teach. The school is in the center of Porto, close to so many beautiful places. I stayed in a host family, the ideal way to practice what you learned at school. It was such a friendly family, I was free and still had a place with people who could help me if I need it.

We had a lot of fun in our small class and I also learned a lot. Rita always answered our questions and was also very interested in us. I can really recommend this small language school. You learn something about Portugal, the peculiarities of the language and you also get to know other people. Thank you very much for this wonderful week!

Angela really encouraged me to speak more, and with my very limited knowledge of Portuguese, we managed to cover various topics from family to the current political situation. The school is located in the city centre and very easy to find.
Show details » Read more...I had the chance to spend 3 weeks (mid-July/early August) at the Oficina de Português Porto.
4 hours of lessons 5 mornings a week, with the lively Rita, and in small groups of 4 (Spanish, Ukrainian, Irish) using exclusively the Portuguese language. Some reminders / references in English, French or Spanish, only when necessary.
So total immersion, starting with exchange discussions, targeted exercises and increasing but not insurmountable difficulties, lessons when necessary - specific to the Portuguese language.
A little homework, not very restrictive, and beneficial.
Very good working atmosphere, and as a bonus guided tourism / discovery activities, with Federica, Italian Erasmus, adorable.
I strongly recommend and I do not forbid myself to consider returning there to improve my skills: 3 weeks goes by very quickly and the Portuguese language is very rich!
Very very interesting.
muito obrigado
David
This was a perfect week, vey nice people and great teachers giving the feeling learning a lot in a very pleasant atmosphere. For my first steps in Portuguese, I found it perfect and will come back as soon as possible for another course.

All safety rules were followed. I really liked the teachers, they were very friendly and funny and also cooperative. If one day I couldn't have came to the class, they allowed me to stay longer on another day without any problem. The location of the school is excellent, right in the city center.
The main emphasis of the school is speaking. What I didn't like was mixing students from different levels and sometimes because of that I was learning the same things twice. I believe it was because of Covid, they did not have enough number of students to open a groups on each level.
In general I really enjoyed :)
It is well located, the teacher and the coordinator lf the center were very nice and authentic. It felt like home. Maybe the methods were very classic (Following exercises of a book). Maybe it would have been interesting to learn the basics with more interactive exercises of question-answer and special assignments or a project , but also the group was very small.

If you have motivation, this school is perfect to achieve success easily.
The school is perfectly central in Porto, so after the class everything can be reached easily by foot.
The school is near the centre of Porto and easy to get to. I really enjoyed the classes and learnt a lot in only one week. My teacher Rita was great and took us on a tour of the city one afternoon. I would have liked more activities, but understand that there was only one because there were very few people at the school when I went. Overall, I had a great experience, although there is not much space in the school besides the classrooms and only one toilet, so I don't know what happens when there are more pupils.

I wanted to combine learning with some private time and it was just perfect. 4 hours a day, plus revision of the material and homework in the evening - that was just the amount of the material my head could handle to be ready for the next day ;) Plus, as the course was run in Porto, I had the opportunity to get some practice right away.
TEACHER - I had the chance to meet just one, Renata - and I find myself extremely lucky :) She is professional, energetic and devoted. Also young and with sense of humour ;) Which made the learning experience enjoyable. She did all she could and, to my mind, successfully, made all the group improve and learn, although initially it seemed we were on much different levels. I really feel she made us all break the barrier of speaking making us talk to one another during the lesson, so we learnt the practical use of the language, not just grammar and exercises.
LOCATION - the school is located in the center, easy to access. The classrooms are simple, but there's everything you might need at the language course. Plus the coffee machine ;)
Overall - I would strongly recommend this school. Hope to get the chance to revisit!
I visited the school for 2 weeks and learned a lot. Both weeks i was in a small class (of 3 and then 2 persons.) Angela, the teacher, is very patient, explains well and is very helpful. She has a big knowledge about the city and her country and loves to share her knowledge with her students.
I was there in the week of Easter. So Friday was a public holiday and i thought i'm gonna loose this day, but actually Angela split the Friday in two extra afternoons. That was very nice and generous of her, especially knowing that she had a lot of work this week.
So i can recommend this school to everyone!
I gave the highest score to this school, because the level of teaching was brilliant. In only 2 weeks I learnt more than during 3 moths of classes in Poland. The teacher speaks portugues (obvious), spanish and english so there is no possibility to misunderstood anything.
The classes are really well prepared, and everything is organized in a timely manner.(listening, copies of exercises etc. are always ready at the begiining of the classes)
The pace of the classes is really good, The teacher encourage everyone to take a part in discussions about currect events, culture, local traditions and a lot of other topics,
I chose intensive course (4h/day) but I had a feeling that the time is running much faster, because we had a lot of activities.
Once a week we had a tour in Porto with the teacher and we visited less popular places.
I really recommend Oficina de Portugues to everyone who wants to improve portguese in a such pleasant way.
You won't regret :)
I really enjoyed the Portuguese course. Rita is a very funny teacher with lots of knowledge, and makes classes very fun and interesting. In addition, the group of students is greatly reduced for more effective teaching and the location of the school is excellent in the center of the city. We also did an activity out of school with Rita and went to visit Vila Nova de Gaia; she told us a bit of history about the city and curiosities.
Without a doubt, I will return to do another course at the Portuguese Workshop !!! =)
My teacher was excellent. She is extremely knowledgeable, very supportive and explains things very clearly. Most importantly went out of her way to tailor classes to my needs. I was fortunate enough to have her to myself for most of the two weeks I was there. We spoke Portuguese all the time and I think my comprehension of spoken Portuguese and my confidence in speaking definitely improved. (My level is around B2. )
The academy is bright, modern and attractive with a small room where you can spend your breaks, if you wish. However you probably won't want to as the building is right in the centre of the main shopping area, opposite the temporarily relocated market and next to Rua Santa Catarina. It's also right next to the Metro. I arranged my own accommodation so can't comment on this. There was only one organised outing whilst I was there but this was reasonable given that there were few students. I have no criticisms at all of any aspect of my experience at Oficina de Português and would definitely recommend it.
Homestays are carefully selected and offer students the opportunity to learn more about the local culture in a comfortable setting while studying Portuguese in Porto. If you have special requests or diet restrictions (because of religion or health reasons), please let us know in advance. Your housing starts on the Sunday before your first day of class and ends on the Saturday after your last day of class, unless otherwise noted. Learn more about homestay housing
