Course description

The Standard Course focuses on learning and actively using language structures – this way the instruction is very much practice oriented. But what does this actually mean? Your teacher will assign you an active role while studying German and will draw you and your fellow students directly into his interactive instruction. We try to avoid that you just sit there passively, listening what the teacher is going to explain up front. Your teacher will help you studying the language by instructing you clearly and thus enabling you to develop and to explain grammatical rules and structures on your own and independently. Because only when you actively understand what you’ve learned you will also memorize and internalize it permanently!

In the Standard Course, German language will always be practiced and taught in context by using as far as possible authentic, everyday life language situations. This way you will study language in everyday, professional and university situations – after all, you study towards a well-defined goal and you want to focus on that from the very beginning. Through this practical orientation of the Standard Course, already after a very short time you will gain a solid linguistic basis for making yourself more familiar with the language and culture in Germany, with the country and its people. And this will be true for all areas of modern life, because our modern didactical approach will always concentrate on listening, reading, speaking and writing.

"A fantastic experience in Munich !!"

Fabrizio Cora, student from Italy

I followed a week of standard german language (for beginners) in Munich...
It was a really nice experience.
The school is located just in front of the train station and also near to the international bus station.
The course was very well organized, the teacher (Olga) was prepared and professional.

The lessons with Olga were funny and the concepts easy to understand for beginners.
The school also organize extra activity as castles visits or friendly meetings between the students in pubs, in museums or somewhere in the city.

What I really appreciated is the school organization and the kindness of all the people in the school.
The accomodation in "a&o München Hackerbrücke" was really good...also the hotel is near to the train station (only 15 minutes by walk) and to the school (20 minutes by walk).
Breakfast super and rooms cleaned and comfortable.

"Excellent experience, instructors and staff"

Janet J Gordon, student from Canada

The teachers were all excellent as well as being very patient and considerate. The staff were accommodating and helpful. The location was very convenient. I especially appreciated how we were able to add on an additional section in the afternoon. The staff were very helpful and friendly. We did not join any activities as we had already programmed other activities.

"I improved my German, while having fun."

Sophia Barthelson, student from Sweden

The course taught me a lot. The other participants were mostly easy to cooperate with and the teacher made the lessons interesting. A good mix between grammar, vocabulary and information about what is going on in Germany right now. The intensive training in the afternoons was a little too mixed, with students on different levels in one group. However, the teacher did a good job, despite this.

The teacher training could have been better. It was interesting to see how classes on a lower level than my own were taught, but a whole day in one group was a bit much. It might have been better to have half days (two lessons) in two different groups. Plus, it was difficult to find enough time to talk to the teacher afterwards, especially when it was the same day as the intensive course. That left no time at all to have lunch and hardly enough time to talk through what had happened during the lesson. I would have wanted to have real lessons ABOUT teaching. This was more a question of luck. One of the groups I observed was on the right level, about the same as my own students. The other was a little too high. I had no idea beforehand what they were going to cover during the lessons that day.

Facilities at the institute were adequate. Activities could have been better. The guided walking tour of central Munich was nice, but the guide (a young woman from DID) had only lived in Munich for a short time and had to google things that we saw. She knew a little about restaurants, but almost nothing about history. It would be good to have interesting outings every weekend. I realise that those who stay longer at the institute might want some variation, but those of us who are only there for two or three weeks would rather have the option of going to Salzburg or Neuschwanstein than visiting Olympiapark, which is easy to do on your own. So one of the most interesting outings should be offered every weekend.

The host family (one woman) was really nice and easy to communicate with. Her home was comfortable and clean, but it was a little too far from the school. Since there were problems with both bus and train services I had to leave at 7:40 to be sure I was at school in time for the first lesson at 9:00. Going home I mostly had to walk from the train station, because the bus didn't come. Even if public transport had been running according to their time tables, it would have taken a whole hour each way.

"Overall it was a great experience."

Lorna Modeen, student from UK

The teachers were great and good at explaining concepts we didn't know with words we did know. I do wish it wasn't so focussed on learning grammar from a textbook, but it was a good learning experience.

"All the time spent during my training, I can only describe as very good!"

Эльбек (Elbek) Нурмухамедов (Nurmukhamedov), student from Uzbekistan

Location, of course, is very convenient to the city center and near the train station München Hauptbahnhof. This arrangement allowed me to easily and rapidly navigate the city and the use of transport.
Оn the first day of my arrival at the institute, I met with the Director. Then the teacher introduced me with all my training program and provided me with a textbook and other relevant information. From the very first day, I was comfortable and pleasant to communicate with the teacher and students. Throughout my studies, I did not feel any discomfort or pressure from the teachers. The course was very useful for me as giving me the opportunity to communicate with native speakers and improving my language skills and oral communication skills. I was very fortunate that my place of residence was very comfortable within the urban area and using a single route. I would also like to express my gratitude for the selection of a family for my accommodation. Mrs. Hemming is a very friendly and caring person! She trusted me and her home was as my own.

"Enjoyable but challenging."

Christine Fulcher, student from Australia

The classes were good but certainly difficult if you struggle with picking up languages. If you are willing to try really hard I'm sure you will get much further. However as someone who has grown up in an English speaking country without really any other interaction with languages being fully immersed was very difficult.

The teachers were lovely and quite understanding but also good at pushing when needed.

Deutsch-institut is in a very good location, very easy to get anywhere and also to travel around with new friends from the course.
