We are a prestigious non-profit school, ranked in the top 3% of all schools in the country, according to the Mexican Ministry of Education (ENLACE-SEP).
Our language school seeks to promote cultural exchange and a better understanding of the Spanish-speaking world, not only among our students but also throughout the world.
Our language courses are part of the school's strategy to provide our students with the necessary skills to succeed in life.
The theoretical basis of our teaching includes constructivism, neurolinguistics and critical pedagogy. We continually update our methods according to the latest research in education and language teaching.
All of our teachers are native speakers and have been trained in applied linguistics and/or language teaching at the post-graduate level in leading universities. They have also been selected on the basis of their strong interpersonal skills, humility and growth mindset. They are all involved in research projects in applied linguistics or in the development of teaching materials with major publishers (e.g. UNAM, Oxford University Press).
We have developed our courses to be highly personalized, whether in a group or private setting. We always take into account our students' interests, goals and learning style, as well as their cognitive skills, which we seek to further develop.
This is extremely beneficial for our language students as we provide a meaningful learning experience. Throughout our programs, students are challenged and their learning process becomes more effective. Generally, students complete our program early and move to the next level in less time than is expected and required.
In turn, we are proud to say that we have had outstanding students who challenge us; many of our students who are thirty years or older have completed postgraduate studies and are very inquisitive in their learning. This creates an inspiring environment for learning and fun at the same time!
The nationality and age mix at Juan Rulfo School varies over different time periods, courses and levels. Throughout the year, the average age is 33. In the summer, the average age is 25.
JR School teaches students from all over the world, including:
The School is located in the city center, 10 minutes away from Puerto Escondido International Airport (PXM). Within the area, you will find hotels/hostels, supermarkets, sports facilities, and the largest market in town. It is also within walking distance of Bacocho, Coral, and Carrizalillo beaches, around 15 minutes.
I take classes 2 hours for 3 days each week. Usually my teacher is Luis Gomez who speaks very clearly and explains grammar, meaning of new words, and other aspects important in learning a language. Luis also has exposed me to different parts of Mexican culture which I find very interesting.
I take the classes remotely through the internet which is very convenient for me since I can just sit at home. We use the lesson book "Dicho y hecho" throughout our lessons and usually I have homework assignments for the next lesson.
Also Luis presented in a discussion group through Zoom the history of some of Mexico's poets and writers. His graphics were very helpful in following the discussion. I learned a great deal that I had never known before.
We are glad that we have contributed to your Spanish learning Mike and we are very happy to have such good students all the way up to Seattle. Hopefully you will visit Puerto Escondido again soon so you can come and see us!
The presentation by Luis Gomez was superbly done with very well written graphics to aid in the discussion of the subject. Mexican literature is hardly known in the USA so I found it very informative and interesting. Luis speaks very clearly and at a moderate tempo so he is easy to understand.

I have studied languages for almost 60 years. First French then Spanish and finally Japanese. Since I moved permanently to Mexico in 2019 I wanted to improve my Spanish. I met Carlos Torres in Puerto Escondido and he told me about the Juan Ruflo Spanish language program. I enrolled. I am now in B1 and I feel I can say with certainty that this is probably the finest language program I have ever experienced. From the professor who is well trained, patient, intuitive and playful to the thoughtful organization of the classes with equal parts grammar studies, dictation, conversation, interspersed with cultural information about Mexico, the entire program is professional. well conceived and thoughtfully administered. I don’t know of another Spanish language program in Mexico with this quality nor perfection.

I enjoyed studying with Centro Escolar Juan Rulfo. I participated in an intensive study program, and I had an excellent writing and grammar instructor. Many of the documentaries and media selected to practice listening comprehension were thought-provoking and well suited to my interests. I benefited dramatically from speaking and conversation focused study at the end of my short program with Centro Escolar Juan Rulfo.
