GLOBAL ENGLISH SKILLS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY
Experience a new and exciting approach to language learning! The newest addition to our family of camps, CISS Vancouver operates on the beautiful campus of Capilano University in North Vancouver; an urban location with modern facilities in harmony with its breathtaking natural environment. Inspired by the beauty and history of the land, and Vancouver’s reputation as a global city of the future, this programme offers students an innovative approach to language learning by combining dynamic classes with our unique “21st Century Skills” workshop series.
Morning language lessons are designed to improve students’ English communication skills while simultaneously raising their overall level of global awareness. Our highly skilled “Global English” teachers use a progressive, student-centred approach to lesson planning, tailoring classes to the specific needs, perspectives, and ideas of their students. Traditional and modern teaching techniques are blended to help students build their self-confidence and authenticity in English by challenging them to expand their vocabularies and knowledge of how the language works.
Drawing on weekly global curricular themes and a rich diversity of source material from around the world, teachers also use the medium of English instruction to create a bridge between the “global community” in the classroom and the world at large. As students improve their language skills, they also gain an understanding of the history, usage and different forms of English around the world, leading to a deeper connection to and command of the language.
Three afternoons per week, students participate in character-building workshops designed to enhance the language learning experience while building the key soft skills considered essential for success in the modern world.
Workshops offer fun and engaging activity-based challenges designed to push students to think in new ways, learn new approaches to problem-solving, and draw connections to their morning lessons. Collectively, the workshops lead to the development of a “21st century” skill set that will help students
navigate the constantly transforming modern workplace and the evolving professional context of the future.
Workshops also present an opportunity for “real world” English practice as students work closely with Canadian “buddies” to discuss and solve their challenges. Buddies are local high school students and add both a meaningful and practical dimension to the programme.
Our workshops are specifically designed to build capacity in the following areas:
• Self Awareness
• Adaptability
• Critical Thinking
• Innovation
• Collaboration
• Communication
• Emphathy
• Global Citizenship
• Community
