Course description

Are you coming to Jordan for only a short time but still wish to become acquainted with the basics of the Arabic language, the Jordanian dialect, and local culture? Then this is the course for you. Over the course of one week of intensive language study, Levant will teach you how to get around and communicate effectively in Arabic about basic topics in Jordan.

Based on a placement test, we devise a curriculum appropriate to your language level. Given the diglossic nature of the Arabic language, the course does not separate Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and Jordanian Dialect into rigid categories. Rather, we will teach you MSA and 'Amiya together, allowing you to learn through experience the situations in which formal and informal registers of the Arabic language are most appropriate. This approach reflects Levant's philosophy of teaching Arabic in a manner that conforms to how native speakers use the language in their normal linguistic output.

The course is divided into 25 50-minute lessons. Centered around thematic blocs focusing on contemporary topics and debates in Jordanian and Arab societies, the lessons cover the four domains of linguistic proficiency: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Each lesson features a text or multimedia clip taken from original Arabic source material that students first study with the help of the teacher. In a second step, the lesson then moves towards applying knowledge gleaned from the text in the form of spoken and written output. This combination of original, culturally-rooted source material and learning the language through practice stems from Levant's philosophy of instilling in students three interconnected competencies: knowledge of language, ability to communicate, and understanding of culture.

We chose the name "Levant" because it encompasses the intercultural vision of the Center. Levant is an English word that refers to the region of the Arab world in which Jordan is situated. The Levant, Bilad al-Sham, or Bilad al-Sharq encompasses Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, and parts of Iraq.

We distinguish ourselves through our flexibility and our ability to provide numerous teaching, training, and consulting services at a superior level. We offer virtual education and face-to-face instruction. In both formats, we apply our unique, time-tested method for elevating our students' communicative competencies.

Through focused, dedicated study with Levant, you will not simply recite words on a vocabulary list or verb conjugations; more than that, your tongue will master the rich, culturally-connected phrases of fluent speakers, phrases that you will carry with you wherever you go.

"I always look forward to the new lessons and I feel like every time I am learning something new!"

I really like that there is a "book" to the program. That helps to follow the content of the classes and write down stuff as well. I like that we are slowly progressing and always repeating at the beginning of each lesson what we did last time. I like that a lesson is 1:15h long, because one hour would be too little but 1:30h too long to concentrate. Sometimes I would like to speak even more to practice the oral pronounciations even more. Maybe a vocabulary list/book with all the new words would help as well to keep track of the new words and to repeat them at home. I like that I get homework because that makes me practice regularly. Also I like that Inas is always available on whatsapp because that helps for questions. I really want to continue online!

I would sas I am absolutely satisfied with the high quality of the lessons. With my private online teacher - Ghufran Othman - I feel my speaking skills have developped a great deal and now I am not hesitant any more to speak in Arabic.

It is deffinitely a great thing that the lessons are accustomed to the student’s schedule. It had never been a problem to reschedule a class and my teacher is flexible about the duration of the lessons as well.

The topics we discuss during the classes are nevet boring. I highly value that I could get to know the Jordanian culture and got an insight into their mentality.

The setup of a regular class is amazing. We learn form videos, recordings, there are always listening exercises, interesing slides with interactive activities and so on.

Within less than two years, my Arabic polished a lot many thanks to the method my teacher teaches me. I hope to continue like this and without any hesitation I can hiighly recommend taking Arabic classes with these skilled tuitors!

My experience with Inas over the past year has exceeded my wildest expectations. At the time I started taking classes with her, I could have a simple conversation about my interests and what I'd studied in school, but nothing more complex than that. Now we have hour-long conversations about politics, human rights, media, and professional life. I've started to translate videos and social media posts for work recently and plan to keep taking lessons with Levant as I switch jobs and move towards a PhD program. Inas picks up on whatever I'm interested in at the moment, whether that be current events, a Netflix show, or a podcast, and turns it into a lesson, which means I take away much more meaning from our time together. I'm proud not only of the progress I've made with my Arabic but the fact that I've also made a friend in the process.
